Common Myths About Immigrating to Canada as a Nurse—Debunked

Dreaming of working as a nurse in Canada? You’re not alone. Every year, thousands of internationally educated nurses (IENs) set their sights on starting a new life in one of the world’s most welcoming and diverse countries. But with dreams come doubts—and plenty of misinformation. Let's bust some of the most common myths about immigrating to Canada as a nurse so you can move forward with confidence.

🚨 Myth #1: You Have to Be in Canada to Apply

Truth: Many immigration pathways, including the Home Support Worker Pilot, allow applicants to apply from outside Canada. In fact, the "Applicants Not Working in Canada" stream is designed specifically for those living abroad. Being outside Canada does not put you at a disadvantage if you meet the requirements and are prepared when the application window opens.

📖 Myth #2: You Need to Be a Registered Nurse to Immigrate

Truth: While Canada welcomes RNs, there are also pathways for licensed practical nurses (LPNs), nurse aides, and caregivers. The key is to match your background to the appropriate immigration stream and be realistic about your initial role. Many IENs start as caregivers and transition to nursing roles after gaining Canadian experience and credentials.

🤷 Myth #3: If You Don’t Have a Job Offer, You Can’t Apply

Truth: Some immigration programs do require a valid job offer, but not all. What’s more important is being prepared and having your documents and assessments in order so you can move quickly when an opportunity arises. At Nurses To Canada, we guide you on how to improve your chances of securing employment and choosing the right program for your situation.

🚫 Myth #4: Only Young Nurses Get Accepted

Truth: Age can impact eligibility for certain points-based programs, but many caregiver and nurse pathways are not age-restricted. In fact, maturity and experience are often viewed positively—especially in caregiving roles where compassion, patience, and professionalism are key.

🚀 Myth #5: Immigration Takes Forever

Truth: It can take time, yes—but being prepared can make all the difference. Some immigration windows open and close within hours, so it’s not just about speed, it’s about timing and readiness. With the right guidance, the process can be faster than you think.

Important Note: On March 31, 2025, the Home Support Worker Pilot hit its application cap the same day it opened—all 2,750 spots were filled in hours, including those reserved for out-of-status workers. There was no second chance!!! This shows how urgent it is to get ready before the next window opens. If you wait, you risk missing out entirely.

🧭 Myth #6: There Are Very Few Immigration Options for Nurses

Truth: The Home Support Worker Pilot is just one of many pathways available. In fact, Canada has over 100 different immigration pathways. Nurses and care workers may be eligible for 10-20—ranging from provincial nominee programs to Express Entry and more. You might even be eligible to apply before the care worker stream opens again for applicants outside of Canada. But we won’t know unless you take action and let us assess your unique situation.

We've already seen how immigration programs in Canada can open and close overnight, depending on demand and government updates. That means the exact number of available pathways is always changing—so it’s important to be prepared and act quickly when opportunities appear.
